氦核作用 （或α作用、α反应）是两种核融合的类型之一，能将恒星的氦转换成重元素，另一种即是3氦过程（3α反应）。 当3氦反应进行时只需要氦的参与，而一旦有一些碳产生，能消耗氦的其他反应也会发生：

氦-4 → 铍-8 → 碳-12 → 氧-16 → 氖-20 → 镁-24 → 硅–28 → 硫–32 → 氩–36 → 钙–40 → 钛–44 → 铬–48 → 铁–52 → 镍–56

其中从氦-4开始到硅-28的反应过程叫氦聚变，从硅-28开始至镍-56的反应过程叫硅燃烧过程。所有这些反应在恒星内部发生的比率都不高，因此对于能量的贡献并不大；比氖（原子量 > 10）重的元素，由于库仑障壁的增加，因此不太容易产生。
