The municipality has a population of 8,626 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 773.69 square kilometres (298.72 sq mi) of which 23.68 km (9.14 sq mi) is water. The population density is 11.5 inhabitants per square kilometre (30/sq mi). The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
