It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Northern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of 2,726 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 699.43 square kilometres (270.05 sq mi) of which 156.15 km (60.29 sq mi) is water. The population density is 5.02 inhabitants per square kilometre (13.0/sq mi).
