In 2008, hurricane Ike made landfall as it swept over Galveston Island on the Texas coast.

The plan is to build a gigantic series  of gates and barriers, as well as manmade beaches and dunes, stretching across the whole  of Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.
