Upper South有很多种定义。常见的一种为在萨姆纳堡之役以前并未脱离联邦的州份。，加上两个分离失败的州：肯塔基、密苏里和在美国内战开始前为维吉尼亚州一部分的西维吉尼亚州。（Meinig, 1993）但今日密苏里州更多被视为美国中西部的一部分。
