水的相对静电容率与温度的关系曲线图。

在电磁学里，相对电容率，又称为相对介电常数，定义为电容率与真空电容率的比例∶

\epsilon_{r} \ \stackrel{\mathrm{def}}{=}\ \frac{\epsilon}{\epsilon_{0}} ；

其中，\epsilon_{r} 是电介质的相对电容率，\epsilon 是电介质的电容率，\epsilon_{0} 是真空电容率。

对于线性电介质，电极化强度 \mathbf{P}\,\! 与电场 \mathbf{E}\,\! 的关系方程序为：

\mathbf{P} = \chi_e \epsilon_{0} \mathbf{E}\,\! ；

其中，\chi_e\,\! 是电极化率。

电位移 \mathbf{D}\,\! 的定义涉及电场和电极化强度：

\mathbf{D}\ \stackrel{\mathrm{def}}{=}\ \epsilon_{0} \mathbf{E} + \mathbf{P}\,\! 。

这公式又可写为

\mathbf{D}= (1+\chi_e) \epsilon_0\mathbf{E}=\epsilon\mathbf{E}\,\! 。

电位移与电场成正比。所以，相对电容率与电极化率 \chi_e 有以下的关系：

\epsilon_r = 1 + \chi_e 。
