Achilles answered, Lo! my friend Patroclus is dead, and Hector has the arms which I gave him to wear.

But Apollo stirred up the spirit of Hector to go against Patroclus. Three times Patroclus rushed against the men of Troy.

But Patroclus answered, You boast too much, Hector. It was not you that slew me, but Apollo.

Did you think to spoil our city, Patroclus? Instead, you are slain, and the great Achilles cannot help you.

Achilles well knew the one unprotected spot in the armor which Hector had taken from Patroclus.

But he lets his close friend (and possible lover) Patroclus  lead the Greeks wearing his armor to inspire the troops.

As the battle reaches its crescendo, it is Achilles who lands the fatal blow, sealing Hector's fate and avenging Patroclus.

When Patroclus came to the battle and the men of Troy beheld him, they thought that Achilles had forgotten his anger and come forth.
