吉祥物是近代广告设计中的工具，意思是指一个象征性的帮忙促销角色，也有人称之为卡通代言人；近年在**则常采用代言人的概念，而称之为虚拟代言人。一般来说，最有名也最广为人知的吉祥物可说是米老鼠，牠做为迪士尼公司的吉祥物已有六十年之久。然而，吉祥物并非全是虚构的卡通人物，尽管在平面设计上，吉祥物不免会因为印刷术的限制、亲和力的加强而卡通化，但也有许多吉祥物是源自真实的动物或事物，例如知名的美国职业篮球队公牛队的吉祥物就不是卡通人物。

吉祥物的起源目前尚没有数据，但从奥林匹克运动会历史推断，目前最早的奥运吉祥物就是1972年慕尼黑奥运中出现的黑色腊肠狗「Waldi」。
