自动识别系统（AIS, Automatic Identification System），是安装在船舶上的一自动追踪套系统，借由与邻近船舶、AIS岸台、以及卫星等设备交换电子数据，并且供船舶交通通管制(VTS)辨识及定位。当卫星侦测到AIS信号，则会显示S-AIS。AIS数据可供应到海事雷达，以优先避免在海上交通发生碰撞事故。

由AIS所发出的消息包括独特的识别码、船名、位置、航向、船速，并显示在AIS的屏幕或电子海图上。AIS可协助当值船副以及海事主管单位追踪及监视船舶动向。AIS集成了标准的VHF发送器以及由GPS或LORAN-C接收器所提供的位置消息，以及其他的电子航海设施，例如电罗经或是舵角指示器。船舶装有AIS收发机和询答机时，可以被AIS岸台所追踪。或者当远离海岸过远时，可借由特别安装的AIS接收器，经由相当数量的卫星以便从庞大数量的信号中辨识船位。

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. When satellites are used to detect AIS signatures, the term Satellite-AIS (S-AIS) is used. AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport.
