速度位（Velocity Potential）被使用在流体动力学上，当流体占满单连通区且无旋性。 如此情况：

\nabla \times \mathbf{u} =0

这里 \mathbf{u} 是流体的流速。所以， \mathbf{u} 可表示为纯量函数\Phi\;的梯度：

\mathbf{u} = \nabla \Phi\;

\Phi\;是对于 \mathbf{u} 的速度位。

速度位不是唯一的。若a\;是一个常数，\Phi+a\;也是对于 \mathbf{u} 的速度位。反过来说，若\Psi\;是对于 \mathbf{u} 的速度位，则\Psi=\Phi+b\;，而b是个常数。

不同于流函数，速度位可以存在于三维流中。

It is used in continuum mechanics, when a continuum occupies a simply-connected region and is irrotational. In such a case,
