激变变星（Cataclysmic variable star，CV），是拥有一颗白矮星和伴星的双星系统（参考双子座U），这颗伴星通常是红矮星，但有些情况下它也可以是一颗白矮星或正在演化成次巨星。已经发现数百颗激变变星。

以观测的观点来看，激变变星很容易被发现。它们通常是相当蓝的天体，而大多数的天体都是偏红的；这些系统的变化经常是相当强且快速的，强烈的紫外线甚至是X射线和一些特有的发射线是这类变星的典型产物。

这两颗星非常靠近，以至于白矮星的引力可以扭曲伴星，并且白矮星可以从伴星吸积物质。因此，伴星经常会被称为施主星，失去的物质会在白矮星的周围形成吸积盘，强烈的紫外线和X射线经常从吸积盘发射出来。吸积盘也是不稳定的，当盘内的部分物质落至白矮星时，会导致 矮新星的爆发。

Cataclysmic variable stars (CV) are stars which irregularly increase in brightness by a large factor, then drop back down to a quiescent state. They were initially called novae, from the Latin 'new', since ones with an outburst brightness visible to the naked eye and an invisible quiescent brightness appeared as new stars in the sky.
