根据IEEE 802.16-2004标准，宽带（broadband）的定义是指拥有高于1 MHz的瞬间带宽，以及支持高于1.5 Mbit/s的数据量。以无线传输方式，达成宽带的要求，称为无线宽带。

IEEE学会制定了IEEE 802.16，作为无线宽带的标准，最著名的产品是WiMAX。
