铁路机车（或称作火车头、机关车、机车头）是一种用来提供铁路列车动力的铁路车辆。英语中「铁路机车」一词是“locomotive”；这字来自拉丁文。“loco”在拉丁文中有着「从某地」之意，是“locus”的离格--“place”（地方）；这字和中世纪的拉丁词“motivus”（产生运动causing motion）合并起来，就是“locomotive”。“locomotive”一字也是英语中“locomotive engine”的简写，首次使用是在十九世纪初，用以分别可动的和固定式蒸汽引擎。

一辆铁路机车本身并不包含载重量，而它惟一的作用就是在轨道上拉动列车。现时有些列车已包含自力推进、能载重的车组；但它们按常理来说不会被视为「铁路机车」，而是被形容为「动力分布式列车」、「动车组」等。这种自力推进的列车常被用作客运列车，而这情况变得越来越普遍；但用在货运列车的情况则较罕见（例子包括货运快车）。能拉动一列无动力列车的车辆不一定被视作「铁路机车」，因为它们可能有着载重空间，或是很少会脱离它们的列车（这是「动车组动车」）

A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine, first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines.
