百分号是表达百分比的符号，加在数值的后面，表达百分之一。

有人主张百分号来自于意大利文的「per cento」（每一百），以下是 D.E. Smith 的考证。

古时本无百分比专用的符号，而是将意大利文的「per cento」以「per 100」「p 100」「p cento」等形式书写。

1425年左右，出现了在「PC」之后加上一个小圈，代表「cento」最后一个字母「o」的写法。

1650年左右，「Cº」的部分再次变形，出现像是「%」站立的符号，接着「P」的部分渐渐开始不写。

大约在1925年左右，开始出现使用斜线的形式()，是现今最普遍的形式。
