表情符号（英语：emoticon），是以文本与符号来传达心情的方式。它原本只是一种网上次文化，但随着互联网和移动电话短信的普及，已经为社会广泛接受。

后来许多通信程序（特别是即时通信程序）及论坛开始应用更生动的小图案（icon）来表示心情，因此20世纪末在英文中有新的词汇来说明这些表情符号，即将情绪（Emotion）与小图案（icon）两个字巧妙地合并，成为新词「Emoticon」。

在日语中，则以汉字「颜文本」（日语：颜文本／かおもじ）称呼表情符号，「颜」字意为脸庞，「颜文本」这个词的意思就是指用文本和符号组成表情或图案来表达撰写者的心情，此词也逐渐为华语地区的年轻人所采用。
