Modern sociologists continue Dubois’ work on racial politics, asking the question: How is race intertwined with political power, and the institutional structures within a society?
This is in opposition to patriarchy, a form of social organization in which institutional structures, like access to political power, property rights, and occupations, are dominated by men.
Institutions are "stable, valued, recurring patterns of behavior." As structures or mechanisms of social order, they govern the behaviour of a set of individuals within a given community. Institutions are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern living behavior.
