在一个著名的例子中，薛定谔猫 (1935)，是一只或死或活的猫，而这只猫到底是死是活则决定于较早的一次随机事件。这个由常见物品构成的思想实验相对通俗地具体化了哥本哈根诠释中的问题。

思想实验是指：使用想像力去进行的实验，所做的都是在现实中无法做到（或现实未做到）的实验。例如爱因斯坦有关相对运动的著名思想实验，又例如在爱因斯坦和英费尔德合著的科普读物《物理学的进化》中，就有一个实验要求读者想像一个平滑，无摩擦力的地面及球体进行实验，但这在现实（或暂时）是做不到的。思想实验需求的是想像力，而不是感官。

A famous example, Schrödinger's cat (1935), presents a cat that might be alive or dead, depending on an earlier random event. It illustrates the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation applied to everyday objects.

A thought experiment considers some hypothesis, theory, or principle for the purpose of thinking through its consequences. Given the structure of the experiment, it may or may not be possible to actually perform it, and if it can be performed, there need be no intention of any kind to actually perform the experiment in question.
