Fantastique来自法语，是一种与科幻、恐怖与奇幻有所交叠的文学类型与电影类型，其定义为：一种超自然现象要发生在故事中，但是除了这个超自然现象之外，故事的其他部份都是现实的。它是法国文学内的重要类型。它与英国的奇幻文学何者能追溯的更早，尚有争辩。不过它目前确实是一个活跃中的类型，而且它与英国的奇幻、恐怖小说、法国的其他文学类型以及世界文学结合在一起发展。

从它的定义看来，fantastique与奇幻文学、魔幻写实主义都有所不同：奇幻文学著作中，超自然现象在作者所设置的那个幻想世界里是被接受而且认为完全合理的；魔幻写实主义中，超自然现象经由解释而当作一般事件被接受；而在fantastique中，故事里的人物，跟读者一样，都是没有办法接受超自然事件发生在现实生活中，而这种对于超自然现象的否认，会在这些事件发生时产生怀疑、害怕等反应。
