大西洋（Atlantic Ocean），是世界第二大洋，原面积8,221万7千平方公里，在南冰洋成立后，面积调整为7,676万2千平方公里，平均深度3627米，最深处波多黎各海沟深达8605米。从赤道南北分为北大西洋和南大西洋。北面连接北冰洋，南面则以南纬60度与南冰洋接连。

大西洋这个中文名称，最早来自于万历十一年（1583年）意大利传教士利玛窦在广东肇庆所翻译的一本名叫《山海舆地全图》的世界地图册，虽然从今天的角度看该地图错误颇多，但是其中大西洋这个中文翻译从那时起便一直沿用至今。

其英文名称是取自于柏拉图曾经提出的至今未被明确发现的亚特兰提斯（Atlantis）。

The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceanic divisions, following the Pacific Ocean. With a total area of about 106,400,000 square kilometres (41,100,000 sq mi), it covers approximately 20 percent of the Earth's surface and about 29 percent of its water surface area. Its name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology, making the Atlantic the "Sea of Atlas".
