单位是中国大陆的特有名词，全称是工作单位，是对人所工作的机构组织的泛指统称。如企业、学校、政府的机关（政府部门）等独立部门。大型企业可以称之为“大单位”，小组织可以称之为“小单位”。

改革开放以前，单位具有很强的社会控制功能。不但职工的住房与伙食、医疗、甚至子女幼儿园均由单位提供，就连结婚与外出旅行等等也要单位批准。一个较大的单位往往就是一个完整的小社会。

改革开放以后，单位的种种社会功能逐渐减弱消失。换工作变得容易得多。以前那些需要单位批准的事情也逐渐沦于形式，在2000年后基本上完全消失。从2003年起，结婚与离婚也不再需要单位的介绍信了。现在单位一词泛指公有制机构组织，例如“国营单位”，而对于私营企业则不称单位。
