1565年的马尔他大围攻之中，统治马耳他的医院骑士团击退了奥斯曼帝国的侵袭。骑士团为防敌人再度来袭，决定兴建一个坚固的要塞都市。1566年3月28日，当时的骑士团总团长瓦莱特为瓦莱**奠基，并予以命名。瓦莱塔因而发展成为繁华的市区，当地大部分古色古香的建筑都源自骑士团统治时期。为了保卫瓦莱**，骑士团在城内置设了一座向海的碉堡，现列为联合国教科文组织世界遗产之一。

Valletta (/vəˈlɛtə/; Maltese pronunciation: [ˈvɐlɛ.tɐ]) is the capital city of Malta, colloquially known as Il-Belt (IPA: [ˈil.bɛlt]; English: The City) in Maltese. Geographically, it is located in the South Eastern Region, in the central-eastern portion of the main island of Malta having its western coast with access to the Marsamxett Harbour and its eastern coast in the Grand Harbour. The historical city has a population of 6,444 as of March 2014, while the metropolitan area around it has a population of 393,938. Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe and the second southernmost capital of the European Union after Nicosia.
