黑便士是最早使用背胶的邮票，同时也是世界上第一张邮票。

邮票上的背胶指邮票背面一层用来保存邮票、方便黏贴，吸收湿气，或是使邮票维持平坦的胶水，“黑便士”（PENNY BLACK）是世界上首先有背胶的邮票。除了一般的胶水之外，有些邮票使用的背胶带有香味。且一般来说，背胶是无毒无臭的。
