跳水，国际公认的竞技运动之一，分为跳板跳水和跳台跳水两种，运动员在一米或三米跳板，五米、七点五米或十米跳台做出指定动作。这项竞技运动是由国际泳联管理，并每四年更新一次规则，最近一次是2009年9月，有效期是2009至2013年。

另外，非由国际泳联管理的竞技跳水有悬崖跳水。由运动饮料赞助的极限跳水比赛，每年巡回不同国家的风景名胜进行赛事，赛事结合表演和竞赛两种性质。 而2013年国际泳联举办的世界游泳锦标赛亦首次以合办形式纳悬崖跳水为赛事项目。

而非竞技跳水包括花式跳水及高台跳水等等，多以表演性质为主。
