The name's origins are traced to ancient Greek, originating from Spyris (Σπυρίς), meaning the one who manufactures spyrides (σπυρίδες), which were a kind of wicker baskets, or meaning the affluent, the rich man, who has much grain or other goods to spyrides (σπυρίδες).
