历史上，己二酸是从油脂氧化法制造。目前商业己二酸是从环己烷经两个氧化步骤大量制造：
- 环己烷 + O2 → 环己醇和环己酮
- 环己醇/环己酮 + 硝酸 + 空气 → 己二酸 + 一氧化二氮
基于环保原则，现有一个新的己二酸合成方法：环己烯、过氧化氢与相转移催化剂产生反应生产己二酸。该化学反应产生的副产物只是水。
