英语里的「剧作家」（playwright）一词首先出现于英国剧作家本·琼森的讽刺诗《致编剧》（To Playwright）。「Play-wright」一词有「编写表演的工匠」的意思，暗讽当时在剧场里工作的二流散文作家。因为当时的剧作家多数采用格律诗体裁，并自称为诗人，这种做法一直延至19世纪早期。尽管如此，现代「playwright」一词已没有贬意。
