Hankasalmi is a municipality of Finland.

It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality has a population of 5,274 (30 June 2015) and covers an area of 687.75 square kilometres (265.54 sq mi) of which 115.89 km (44.75 sq mi) is water. The population density is 9.22 inhabitants per square kilometre (23.9/sq mi). Neighbour municipalities are Kangasniemi, Konnevesi, Laukaa, Pieksämäki, Rautalampi and Toivakka.
