在黄金矩形中以短边为边长划一正方形，矩形剩下的部份是一个较小的黄金矩形，说明如下：

假设一黄金矩形的短边为 b ，长边为　 a= \varphi b
若在黄金矩形中以短边为边长划一正方形，则长边剩下的长度为

a - b = (\varphi - 1)b = \left(\frac{\sqrt{5} + 1}{2} - 1\right)b = \left(\frac{\sqrt{5} - 1}{2}\right)b = \frac{2}{\sqrt{5} + 1} b = \frac{1}{\varphi} b

a /b和 b/a-b 的比值均为 \varphi，因此所组成的矩形仍为一黄金矩形。
