黄极是垂直于地球绕着太阳的轨道面——黄道面的线与虚拟的天球相交会的点。

黄极有两个：

由于岁差，天极以大约25,800年的周期在圆轨道环绕着黄极运动。

黄极在2009年8月26日的座标值是：

当在赤道座标系统中呈现时，这就是地球的转轴倾角。

黄极不可能位于暗黑天空中的天顶。依据定义，黄极与太阳的位置相距90度，因此当黄极位于天顶之际，太阳必定依然在地平在线。
